They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.
Psalm 107:23,24
As you can probably tell from the name of my devotional site and Facebook page, Psalm 107 is close to my heart.
It opens with “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy.” and closes with “Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.”
In between is the story of the redeemed – all those whom God has rescued from struggle and strife, from calamity and chaos.
Verses 23 to 30 speak of those who go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters. These verses tell how on great waters, come great storms, tossing ships high and low and their crews to and fro. Faithful and true, in control of all things, God calms the storm and brings the ship and crew to their desired haven.
Sweet friend, as we read those verses, it can be so tempting to focus on the storm, but let’s look past the danger of the storm for a minute and examine verse 24 again:
“These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.”
Who sees the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep?
They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters.
Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m not near any great waters physically. I’m a mountain girl, fond of mountain lakes, but hours and hours from the ocean. I don’t envision myself becoming a deep sea fisherman or ocean traveler anytime soon.
So, how can I see the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep?
By seeking and serving God wherever I am!
Beloved, when we seek God and His Kingdom, when we actively choose to commit to service, to ministry, to lovingly investing in the lives of those around us, then we are stepping out into the deep – and – there will be storms.
But oh dear heart, we will also be so much better positioned to see the wonders that God is working all around us!
And don’t worry about the highs and the lows that come along the way. God is faithful and true. He will lead you to safe harbor.
How will you go deeper with the Lord today?
In what great waters will you do His business?
