He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree; so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
1 Peter 2:24 CSB
Earlier this week, I had the blessing of hearing a song titled “Calvary’s Enough” by Brooke Ligertwood. If you haven’t heard it, I encourage you to check it out.
The chorus of the song goes like this:
"Calvary's enough Calvary's enough When I know nothing When I know too much What I choose to know right now is Calvary's enough"
As I listened to the chorus of “Calvary’s Enough”, two passages of Scripture came to mind: 1 Peter 2:24 and Romans 10:9-10.
1 Peter 2:24 tells us that “on the tree”, the cross at Calvary, Jesus Christ bore our sins in His body, died on our behalf, so that we might live for righteousness, that by His wounds, we are healed.
Paul tells us in Romans 10:9-10,
If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation.
Sweet friend, it was on the cross at Calvary that Jesus Christ secured our righteousness, made a way for us to be right with God. And as I meditate on those verses in light of the song’s chorus, I am reminded that:
When I know nothing, Calvary’s enough.
- When uncertainty fills me with doubt or fear, righteousness is still mine because what Jesus did on Calvary is enough.
- When doubt leads my feet to stop or fear leads my heart to stray, righteousness is still mine because what Jesus did on Calvary is enough.
When I know too much, Calvary’s enough.
- When the enemy tries to shame me or tempt me with images from experiences I should not have engaged in, I know that his attacks are in vain and righteousness is still mine because what Jesus did on Calvary is enough.
- When I fall prey to the enemy’s attacks and think, say, or do what I should not, righteousness is still mine and repentance is possible because what Jesus did on Calvary is enough.
And dear heart, if you have believed on Jesus, that He is the Son of God who died for your sins at Calvary and was raised again by the Father three days later, and have confessed Him as Lord, then for you too, Calvary is enough.
God will never think less of you when you are uncertain, doubtful, or fearful because God sees only Calvary, sees only the righteousness of Jesus Christ in you.
There’s nothing the enemy can throw up from your past or bring into your present, there’s no threat he can make against your future, that can stand against you because God sees only Calvary, sees only the righteousness of Jesus Christ in you.
We are all of us plagued at some time by the uncertainty of what we do not know or by the reality of what we do know and wish we didn’t. But for all who have put their trust and hope in Christ, Calvary is enough. There is no need to fear what we do not know or worry about what to do, and there is power to turn away from what we wish we did not know or do not wish to do.
Today, I am thankful that Calvary is enough. When doubt and fear come, I choose to know that Calvary is enough. When I am reminded of unpleasant realities, I choose to know that Calvary is enough. Praise God, Calvary is enough!
