I will praise the Lord according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the Lord most high.

Psalm 7:17

El Elyon, pronounced [el-el-yohn], comes from the Hebrew root meaning “to ascend”¹. Used 28 times in the Old Testament, El Elyon first appears in Genesis 14:18 and is used as both an adjective to describe God as the most exalted God and also as a noun to show that God has absolute sovereignty over all – that He has the highest preeminence, that He is first in all things².

What does this name mean for us?

Sweet friends, our God is the Most High – the Alpha – first among all that exists and all that ever will exist. Even the enemy Lucifer acknowledged that God is Most High when he proclaimed that he would “ascend above the heights of the clouds” and “be like the most High” (Isaiah 14:14).

Now, what happened to that snake in the grass for his presumption?

God, our Lord Most High, cast him to the pits of hell (Isaiah 14:15) because no one can ever be as high as our God. Our God has always been and will always be victorious because He is Most High, none can ever rise above Him!

Beloved, when the devil comes prowling around your family, your finances, your friendships, you have no need to fear! Our Lord Most High has disarmed and overcome the enemy; He has put the enemy to shame (Colossians 2:15). As my favorite straight-shooting apostle wrote: Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you (James 4:7).

Why will the devil flee?

Because when we submit ourselves to God – when we acknowledge God as the Most High and put him FIRST in each area of our lives – the enemy doesn’t stand a chance; he can pick at us all day when we choose focus on lowly things, but he cannot stand against us when we focus on the Most High God!

Dear heart, are you in need of a victory?

• Put God first in every area of your life!

Do you need defense against the enemy?

• Lift God’s name high in every area of your life!

Submit yourself this day and each day to El Elyon, God Most High, give Him all your time, talent, treasure, raise Him in all things and be amazed at what He does in you, through you, and for you!

Most High God, forgive us the times that we forget You are Most High, first in all things. Lord, help us to aim our focus high, to remember that You are the Most High God, that You and You alone deserve first place in all areas of our lives. None has ever been or will ever be above You! May we put You first in our families, our finances, our friendships, and all things! When the enemy comes prowling, may we be found proclaiming Your name as Most High, trusting in Your Most High protection, praising You in our highs and our lows for You God are always Most High!
