Thankful for His Many Names!

Revisiting the Names of God Series

God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”.

Exodus 3:14a

Who is God?

A question asked throughout ages. A question to which many have dedicated a lifetime of study, some fruitfully and others – not so much.

Who is God?

He is clear in defining Himself – I am who I am – but who is that?

He is Elohim. El Shaddai. Yahweh Nissi. Attiyq Youm. And more…

Though our English language seems satisfied with one short word – God, in the original Hebrew God identifies Himself with at least 16 unique names1 in the Old Testament. Sweet friend, I don’t know about you, but – though the English language is this English major’s first love – I often feel cheated by the broad-sweeping generalizations of the English language.

I mean, how could one word capture the fullness of our great and mighty God? He is immense, immeasurable, and one name simply will not do.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll explore each name and celebrate God’s continual effort to draw us closer to Him through greater understanding of who He is and how much we mean to Him. As we prepare our hearts for a deeply intentional effort to draw closer to our God, please allow me to speak this blessing over you:

May the Lord our God reveal Himself to you as Elohim, the Creator, creating in your heart a longing to know Him by each and every name He holds. May He show Himself to you as the God of Knowledge, imparting to you the wisdom to understand each name, more clearly defining to you who He is. May each name that you study give you a deeper reason to love, praise, and worship the Ancient of Days.
