Throwback Thursday: On Assignment

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.

Ephesians 2:10 (CSB)

Why am I here?

Does my life even matter?

Sweet friend, those are two questions that the enemy loves to twist us up in knots over. I know he’s certainly distracted me with them and filled me with doubt over them too.

BUT GOD – man I love that phrase! – God gives us very clear answers to those questions.

Why am I here? Why are you here?

To honor and glorify God.

How do I know?

Because of verses like 1 Corinthians 10:31:

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

and 2 Corinthians 4:6:

“For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

Dear heart, we have a very clear purpose on this earth. God created you, and He created me for a relationship with Him. He is good, and His loving kindness never ends; He gathers us to Himself because we are His, chosen and deeply loved, and His steadfast love deserves our praise; every corner of the world needs to know about the wonderous works He has done for mankind (Psalm 107).

Does my life even matter?

Absolutely it does!

Every person has been created for relationship with God, to know His love and praise Him for it, glorify Him in every corner of the world for it.

BUT YOUR life matters as an INDIVIDUAL too.

God has placed you in this time for specific assignments, for good works which He has prepared for you to do (Ephesians 2:10). And beloved, no matter what version I checked, and I checked 20+, the word used in Ephesians 2:10 is always plural – good works or good things.

God has made you uniquely you, with the specific details of your background and history, your redemption story, your talents and gifts, your walk with Christ, to do good works as a NEEDED PART of the Body of Christ (Ephesians 4:1-16; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31).

Your individual life matters and HOW you live it matters!

We can accomplish the purpose that God gives us all anywhere and everywhere we go, in anything and everything we say and do. This is why Paul said to the church at Corinth to glorify God in everything they did.

But your individual assignments, those are unique to you. They may change from season to season. You may have several at once in the different roles in which God places you. To know your specific assignments, you must draw close to God and listen, listen, listen to His leading. Trust me, I’ve tried other methods. The only one that works is learning to abide; to cling closely to the Lord, seek to consistently obey His word, and listen (John 15:5; John 14:21; John 8:47).

When we embrace our God-given purpose, we find peace and joy and contentment and so much more, but to have full confidence in our reason for living, to push back against the doubts raised by the enemy, we must also know and embrace the individual assignments God has prepared for us to do.

I am becoming more convinced by the day that lives are changed for the better, souls are won for the Kingdom, when individual Christians – that’s you Sister, that’s you Brother, and that’s me too – when individual Christians walk in faith, embracing the individual assignments God has for them in each season of their lives.

How are you on assignment today?

If you aren’t sure, the first step is to draw closer to the One who knows you and your assignments the best. Ask Him for revelation today. And be ready for a transformative, life-giving journey to begin!

I’m currently on assignment with the Lord finishing the first draft of “Teaching Practices that Testify: Practices that Give Students Hope” and on directing our children’s Christmas program for church. I won’t be posting on a regular schedule for a few more weeks. To ensure you don’t miss a post, please consider subscribing via email below. Thanks!
