39 When they decrease in number and become impoverished
through oppression, trouble, and sorrow,
40 the Lord pours contempt on their princes,
causing them to wander in trackless wastelands.
41 But he rescues the poor from trouble
and increases their families like flocks of sheep.
42 The godly will see these things and be glad,
while the wicked are struck silent.
43 Those who are wise will take all this to heart;
they will see in our history the faithful love of the Lord.
- Psalm 107:39-43
Sweet friends, as we look at Psalm 107, we see that most of the verses focus on what God has gathered us from – how He has redeemed us from all manner of situations and called us to Himself as His people. We see the phrase,
“Let them praise the Lord for his great love
and for the wonderful things he has done for them.”
repeated in lines 8, 15, 21, and 31.
Why such a strong focus on what God has redeemed us from?
Why repeat 4x that the redeemed should praise the Lord?
Because “those who are wise will take all this to heart; they will see in our history the faithful love of the Lord.” (v.43).
They will see in our history the faithful love of the Lord.
Between verse 1 and verse 43, Psalm 107 tells the story of God’s faithfulness to us.
The psalmist challenges us, “Has the Lord redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies.” (v.2)
Why?
Because it is in our history that the world will see the faithful love of our great and mighty God. It is in our life story, each and every one of us, that those around us will bear witness to the awe-inspiring power of God’s transformative love.
Yes, the world will and should learn of God’s goodness from our Biblical heroes, from the lives of Abraham and Moses and Joseph and Esther and Ruth and David and Hannah and Peter and Paul and John the Baptist and so many more.
BUT Psalm 107 reminds us that they will and should also learn of God’s goodness from YOUR LIFE and from my life.
Has God redeemed you?
If so, speak up! Let the story of your life tell of His faithful love.
If not, I assure you friend, He wants to redeem you and He can redeem you. He is the God who turns things around (Psalm 107:33-38). He desires all to come to know Him (1 Timothy 2:4-6). Let the Lord redeem you from the hand of the enemy today. Let Him turn your desert into pools of water!
