He is the Way

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6

I have a confession: I married a Star Wars fan.

That may not seem like much of a confession to some, but if you know, you know. All the movies, all the shows, all the cartoons, all the collectibles, the quotes, the references. Oh my, it’s a lot.

His most recent – let’s say – dedicated fan investment, has been in a series titled “The Mandalorian”. The lead character is bound by tight adherence to an ancient code. When he or others of his order, clan, religion (that part’s a little hazy to me) make a decision based on their creed, they say “This is the way.” It’s the catchphrase for the show; my husband even has a license plate frame stamped with it.

“The way of the Mandalor” (plural for Mandalorian?) is very narrow, often making the lead character’s decisions unpopular and even life-risking. Naturally, few people in that fictional world choose to become a Mandalorian, and that got me thinking…

As Christians, we too are called to walk a narrow way.

Matthew 7:13-14 tells us to:

“Enter through the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who go through it. How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it.”

While it is God’s desire that all should be saved (1 Timothy 4:2-6), we all have friends and loved ones who we know are refusing or have refused God’s invitation to salvation. The way is narrow, and some will choose not to walk in it.

In the show, the way is a code, a set of rules handed down through generations of a nearly extinct people, often questioned and frequently deemed archaic or unnecessary.

In real life, the way is so, so very much more than a code or set of rules.

The way is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Unchanging. Everlasting. There in the beginning and there in the ending (John 1:1-4).

Jesus is the way, and He is the one who makes a way.

As Anne Wilson sings, “He makes a way where there ain’t no way. Rises up from an empty grave….”

As Leeland procaims, “He is the Waymaker, Miracle Worker, Promise Keeper, Light in the Darkness…”

As I think on “the way” today, I can’t help but think about all of the different ways I’ve tried to find my way. I’ve walked the way of religion, following rules. I’ve walked the way of education, following degrees. I’ve walked the way of promotions, of popularity, of people pleasing… There are so many ways to follow in this world, but I can tell you that none of them are THE WAY.

Dear heart, the way is narrow because the way is always, only Jesus (John 14:6).

When you make a decision, can you state, “This is the way.”, and know with confidence that your decision really is what Jesus would do? what God is calling you to do?

When you give advice about the way someone should go or the way they should say or do something, is the way you’re giving them pointing them to Jesus Christ? Are you advising them to lean into God because He will give the best way? Make a way where there is no way?

Brothers and Sisters, does your life exemplify the way?

If you aren’t sure, get into your Bible and get into prayer. Ask God to reveal to you through His word where you are following a way other than Jesus.

It is my earnest prayer that we will each of us follow the way more closely each day; that we will choose to enter by the narrow gate of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and avoid the broad path to destruction.

It is my hope that these posts and writings assist you in walking on right paths for His namesake. I’m not posting quite as often right now, so to avoid missing a post, please consider subscribing to the Psalm107:2 email list below:
