17 Some were fools; they rebelled
and suffered for their sins.
18 They couldn’t stand the thought of food,
and they were knocking on death’s door.
19 “Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.
20 He sent out his word and healed them,
snatching them from the door of death.
21 Let them praise the Lord for his great love
and for the wonderful things he has done for them.
22 Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving
and sing joyfully about his glorious acts.
Psalm 107:17-22 NLT
Some were fools.
Oh friends, I don’t know about you, but when the word “fool” appears in the Bible, it makes me cringe.
Most of us don’t mind to be silly in front of our loved ones. We usually hope other people find us fun to be around.
But fool – that has connotations of poor decision making and stupidity, of living in a way that makes other people laugh “at us” rather than because we chose to make them laugh.
No, we don’t like to be seen as fools.
And yet, in Psalm 107, God reminds us that at times we are all of us quite foolish. When we read 107:17, we see that “some were fools; they rebelled and suffered for their sins”.
Has this been you? Has this been me?
Assuredly, it has. Romans 3:23 tells us clearly that “all have sinned”.
I have sinned. You have sinned.
We have all rebelled against God and His Word.
We have been…fools.
And we have suffered for our sins.
But God – man I love those words!
God has been faithful to redeem us from our foolishness and rebellion.
Once, when we cried out for salvation, recognized our sinfulness, asked for forgiveness, and chose to follow Jesus. And again and again when we choose our willfulness over God’s will, when we rebel from ignorance of His Word, when we lose focus and drift into our own way instead of His way.
Praise God, when we cry out “Lord, help!”, He sends out His Word and heals us! He snatches us from death’s door – because trust me friend, sin will always lead us to death, mental death, emotional death, spiritual death, death of relationships, death of ministries; the wages of sin is always death (Romans 6:23).
But the gift of God through Christ Jesus is eternal life and a more abundant life on earth (Romans 6:23; John 10:10)!
Beloved, is rebellion making a fool of you today? Is sin in your life sickening your heart, your relationships, your closeness with God?
Cry out, “Lord, help!”.
God is faithful to redeem you, to gather you up in His healing hands and make you whole.
Praise God for His eternal redemption and His daily redemption!
Has the Lord redeemed you?
If so, speak up!
If not, you need only ask. God loves you and has wonderful things in store for your redemption story!
