Belt of Truth Continued
13Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.
Ephesians 6:13-15
I think I’m probably showing my age here, but did anyone else refuse to wear elastic waisted pants/shorts in junior high or high school for fear of being “pants’d”?
You know, that supposedly hilarious joke where someone comes up behind you and tugs your pants downward so your underwear or bottom is shown to everyone standing nearby?
Yeah, I never understood why that was funny, but the boys (and some of the girls) in my junior high certainly thought it was.
Anyone remember how to stop those immature pranksters in their tracks?
That’s right. You wear a belt. The prankster tugs your pants and – nothing happens – they stay right where they are supposed to and the prankster, shocked, stands still long enough for you to take a whack at him/her.
And that little trip down memory lane has me thinking about the purpose of the belt of truth.
Sweet friends, the devil would love nothing more than to “pants” you on a daily basis, to do more than just embarrass you, to let the world see the parts of you that you would never want anyone to see, to make you afraid to go out in public at all.
But God – how great are those words – God has given us the perfect way to defend ourselves against the devil’s attempts to harm us.
When we wear the belt of truth, we:
- are protected from shame and embarrassment (Philippians 1:20).
- have nothing to hide because Jesus has washed away our sin (Hebrews 10:10-12).
- have nothing to fear because God has given us a spirit of power and love and self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7).
How do we put on the belt of truth?
First, we ask Jesus Christ to be our personal Lord and Savior (John 3:16; Romans 10:9-11).
Then, we study the Bible to learn more about Who God is and what He desires for us and from us (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
We obey God’s Word (2 Corinthians 10:5).
We fellowship with other Believers and hold each other up in truth (James 5:16).
We continue daily focusing on being more like Christ, walking more closely with Him in word and deed, cinching the belt of truth tighter and tighter until the day God calls us home and there’s no way the devil can pants us ever again.
Today, let us reflect on how we can cinch the belt of truth most tightly about ourselves. To read more about God’s truth, check out: https://psalm1072.com/2022/09/27/tuning-into-the-right-voice/
Tomorrow, we’ll take a look at another piece of armor: the breastplate of righteousness.
