Power in the Word

89 Forever, O Lord, your word
    is firmly fixed in the heavens.
90 Your faithfulness endures to all generations;
    you have established the earth, and it stands fast.”

Psalm 119:89-90 ESV

Last night my mind would not shut down. The more I tried to settle into sleep the more my mind kept adding things to my professional, family, and ministry to-do list. While my mind was overwhelmed with activity, my emotions kicked in with disappointment and heartache: things I hadn’t done as well as I’d wanted recently, goals I hadn’t met in life, dreams that God and I are disagreeing on how to make reality.

I tossed and turned alternating between crying, praying, trying to think my way through everything, and willing my body to just sleep. Finally, sometime after 2 am, God reminded me of a conversation I’d had with two of my Sisters in Christ earlier in the week. One of them was sharing her testimony of how God brought her through a storm in her life and she said that when she couldn’t sleep, she would open her Bible and hold it tightly against her chest. She said that Holy Spirit gave her peace that washed over her from her head to her feet and her muscles released all their tension and she was able to sleep.

So, I got up, took my pillow and blanket, scooped my Bible up off the kitchen table along with my current study, and headed to the couch. I began reading my study, which led me into God’s Word, and every verse was about God’s sovereignty, His will, and His faithfulness to see His will prevail. After several verses, I held my Bible tightly and I prayed. I released my to-do list to God. I released my hurt and disappointment to God. And I slept. I had some unsettling dreams that woke me once, but when I saw my Bible on the side table, I went back to sleep.

Sweet friends, there is power in the Word of God. Power to overcome our fears and our hurts. Power to bring peace to our racing minds and heavy hearts. God’s Word is fixed firmly in the Heavens. Like God, it never changes. His Word is filled with His faithfulness because He is faithful to all generations. He is faithful to me and He is faithful to you. He has established the earth and He is in control.

We’ve truly no need to fret about tomorrow or to regret yesterday. We must only focus on Him today. Praise God, His plan is bigger than our failure! Praise God, He is faithful through His Word to remind us that He’s guiding every detail of our lives, even the heartache and disappointment, for our good and for His glory!
