The Whole Armor of God – 5

The Breastplate of Righteousness Continued

Yesterday we learned that all who believe on Jesus Christ are covered in the righteousness of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21) and that because of Christ, we can put on the breastplate of righteousness and be protected from the accusations of the devil (Revelation 12:10). In this way, we are freed from the wages of sin and can walk securely in the hope of eternal life in Heaven (Romans 6:23).

At the end of our time together yesterday, I posed the idea that just because we’re covered in Christ’s righteousness doesn’t mean we should go looking for trouble.

Brothers and Sisters, believers in Christ have no need to worry about the devil’s accusations because the devil cannot change God’s mind about our eternal destination. But, as long as we’re still breathing here on earth, the devil can stir up physical trouble in our lives, and we still have responsibilities in this physical world to bring others to God’s Kingdom. Knowing this, we must also consider the defense that the breastplate of righteousness gives us in the here and now as well.

Let’s dig into that idea a little more today by visiting Titus 2:7-8.

In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

Titus 2:7-8

Titus 2:7-8 reminds us to focus on being people of integrity. People who do the right thing even when no one is looking. The breastplate of righteousness, along with the belt of truth, helps us live lives that are above worldly reproach.

Right actions allow others to see our commitment to Christ and how Christ is working in our lives to make us more like Him. Because we love Jesus and we are thankful for His righteousness freely given to us, we should accept God’s grace and be kind to ourselves as we grow and make mistakes, but we must be careful not to take advantage of grace by doing whatever we want (Galatians 5:13).

When we focus on wearing the breastplate of righteousness, we remember to:

– be an example of good deeds (Matthew 5:14-16)

– live faithfully in God’s word (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

– be serious, dignified, sincere (Romans 12:9; Proverbs 31:25)

– be sound in speech, honest, wise (Proverbs 17:27, 2 Corinthians 4:2)

Beloved, take some time today to reflect on how God’s Word directs us to live rightly in the here and now. Consider how being more aware of the breastplate of righteousness can give you security and remind you to live more fully committed to following God’s direction and teaching.

Tomorrow, we’ll talk about walking the walk some more as we examine the next piece of armor: the shoes of peace.
