But With God…
Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.
Matthew 19:26
As we prepare to enter Holy Week with the coming of Palm Sunday tomorrow, it seems only fitting to explore and celebrate one more “but God” moment.
Matthew 19:26 is a well-known and often quoted Bible verse.
It’s even quoted in times of stress or challenge by people who do not profess a belief in Jesus Christ.
Why?
Because it – like all of God’s Word – is absolute truth, and – though many don’t like to admit it – in the very core of our being, we know we need God.
Even those who do not believe, know they need God.
You see, in this past week of examining “but God” moments, one undeniable truth shines through them all:
We need God.
If not for “God’s great love for us”, we would be eternally condemned (Romans 5:6-11).
If not for “Oh my Lord, My God”, we would be imprisoned in the earth, consumed by the jaws of death (Jonah 2:5-6).
If not for “God intended it for good”, we would be buried under the pain and sorrow of what the enemy meant for evil (Genesis 50:20).
If not for “God did not give”, we would be captured by the powers of darkness (1 Samuel 23:14).
If not for “God is the strength of our hearts”, we would fall into despair and defeat (Psalm 73:26).
If not for “God’s truth”, we would be tossed to and fro with no foundation on which to stand (2 Timothy 2:16-19).
If not for “God chose”, we would never experience the upward call of Christ, never see the miraculous things God can do with an ordinary life (1 Corinthians 1:26-29).
Brothers and Sisters, every “but God” moment reminds us of our desperate need for God; every “but God” moment shows us that our God is the God of possible.
There is no greater source of hope, no stronger foundation on which to stand, no rescue more absolute, no salvation so complete, no love so unwavering.
Beloved, whenever all hope seems lost, whenever the enemy has you on the ropes, whenever you feel like you simply aren’t enough, remember these two words: “but God”.
