Where is Your Treasure Stored?

“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”

Matthew 6-19-21

Friday marks the end of the work week for many of us.

What did you work for this week?

Did you work for money, or did you work to please and glorify God?

Unless you’re in vocational ministry, that’s a question that can make a person say “ouch”. I know it used to make me cringe because I used to think that the two were separate – the work I did for an income and the work I did for God. For years, I felt badly about the amount the hours I worked in a “secular career” and longed for a purely vocational ministry believing that was the only real way to do work that pleased and glorified God.

Over the past year though, after a lot of prayer and some God-led advice from Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I recognized that whether or not God is pleased with our work, whether or not our work brings Him glory really depends on how we worked and what we do with the result of that work.

You see, when we work with a cheerful heart and seek to spread the light and love of Jesus Christ to others, we earn an income here on earth and we also please God and bring Him glory – treasures that are worth far more than earthly compensation, eternal treasures laid at His feet in Heaven.

But, oh friend, when we work to get ahead on this earth or when we seek to just get through the day, ignoring others, being rude, or putting them off, we earn an income here on earth and maybe earn ourselves some glory, but we also leave a trail of hurt and our harmful witness displeases God.

Whether you are a CEO of a Fortune 500 company or the CEO of your home, the person at the top of the workplace hierarchy or at the bottom, it doesn’t matter nearly so much what you do as it does how you do it.

Dear heart, God tells us many times throughout the Bible to trust in Him and our needs will be met; we don’t need to store up earthly treasures because God has our earthly needs covered.

A good question to reflect on over the weekend:

How can I use my title, position, job, talents, etc…throughout the week to be a light in the darkness, to bring glory to God and blessings to others, to focus on Heavenly rather earthly treasures?
