In Genesis 12:1, when God asks Abram to leave the land he’s in, He does not tell Abram where to go or how to get there. He simply says, “I will show you”.
To show Abram, God had to be with Abram, to walk with him, to talk with him along the journey. If God just wanted to get Abram to a place, He would have just told him where to go. Instead, God went with him and showed him; God spent time with Abram and Abram spent time with God and through the journey they built a relationship. It was such a strong relationship that Abram was called “friend” by God and is known to us today as “a friend of God”.
Sweet friends, when God doesn’t give us all the details up front, it isn’t because He’s trying to be mysterious or because He’s distant or indifferent. Quite the opposite really.
God doesn’t give us all the details because He wants to reveal more of Himself to us on the journey. He wants to walk with us and talk with us and grow us along the way.
For me, I’m learning that daily communion with God, daily obedience to whatever He tells me to do along the way far exceeds the temporary satisfaction I might get from knowing the outcome of where we’re headed or what we’re doing. I’m learning to stop looking for what I think needs to happen first, and to simply say, “yes”, to the beginning of the journey, trusting Him to show me where we’re going as we go. Over the past few months, He’s shown me so much of who I am in Him and He’s continued to refine His calling on my life.
Beloved, we may never fully know where God will take us or what the outcome will be, but we do know how to begin:
Yes, Lord. Yes.
