Get Curious

Do you know what my favorite thing is about the shepherds in the Christmas story?

Their curiosity.

They were afraid of the angel’s appearance, but they were curious enough not to run away. They had sheep to tend, jobs to do, but they made a joint decision to go check out “this thing that has happened”.

Think about it. These shepherds were most likely young men, young men whose attitude toward babies probably leaned on the “if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all” belief. They were also supposed to be watching the sheep; something that required their constant attention. And yet, they were curious enough to leave their work and go to Bethlehem. I always imagine that they discussed on the way, what was it about this baby that had the angels proclaiming his birth? Could it really be the Messiah, come at last? What would he look like? What’s he doing in a manger of all places?

Sweet friends, were that we could all be as curious about God’s message as those shepherds that night! That we would all drop all that we have going on to rush to the place God calls us, uncertain of what we may find there, but excited to “see this thing that has happened which the Lord has told us about”!

Maybe it’s a church that God is calling you to, a new church or a church you haven’t been to in a while. Maybe it’s a Bible study He wants you to dive into to learn about Him or a commitment to spend more time reading the Bible. Maybe it’s a service or a mission field He wants you to check out.

Dear heart, I don’t know what thing the Lord is calling you to check out, but I know it’s something worth being curious about. The laundry will wait. So will the dusting and the school work. Your job too. God is calling. Get curious. Get out there. See what God has for you to see!
