Post 5: Thankful for His Many Names!
And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God.
Genesis 21:33
El Olam, pronounced [el-oh-lahm], derives from the Hebrew root ‘lm meaning “eternity”1. The name Olam expresses completely that God is everlasting, beyond the constraints of time2. He goes behind us and before us and beside us, always making a way!
Some highlights of its use include:
But the Lord is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation. - Jeremiah 10:10
The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.
Exodus 15:18
The Lord sits upon the flood; yea, the Lord sits as King for ever.
Psalm 29:10
What does this name mean for us?
Dear heart, our God is the same yesterday, today, and forevermore. His throne stands forever and ever (Psalm 45:6). He is literally untouched by time. He does not grow old. His promises never expire. His glory never fades.
Because He is the beginning and the end and every time between, He goes before us and behind us making a way in His timing. Truly, there is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens and it is all subject to God’s perfect timeline (Ecclesiastes 3:1; 2 Peter 3:9).
Beloved, we can wait on the Lord in peace and confidence knowing that His help will arrive precisely when needed, His provision will come right on time.
Praise God for He is El Olam – the EVERLASTING GOD!
Great and everlasting God, before time began, You existed. When time as we know it passes away, You will exist and we – the redeemed of the Lord – will exist forevermore in peaceful paradise with You! Thank You God for Your timeless goodness, for Your infinite care for us, Your perfect plan. May we look for You before us, hold Your hand as You walk beside us, and praise Your name for Your protection and provision in the days already behind us. Amen.
